The Institute for Political Science and European Affairs at the University of Cologne has made significant progress in the latest Shanghai Ranking (2023).

The ranking considers various indicators of research performance including publications in top journals, citation impact, per capita output and international collaboration. In Germany, the Institute has moved from 7th place in 2022 to 5th in 2023. Just five years ago, the Institute was at the 11th spot in Germany. This progress is noteworthy, especially given the larger departments the Institute is competing against.
The Institute is now also ranked 2nd in the Social Sciences at the University of Cologne and within the WiSo Faculty, positioned after Sociology and before Economics and Management. Overall, the Institute is the 4th ranked subject at the University of Cologne.
